Ralph Boschung takes two top six finishes in strong Baku F2 weekend

Ralph Boschung scored 14 points in the third round of the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship in Azerbaijan, twice finishing in the top six.

Off the back of his best ever F2 weekend in Monaco, Ralph had immediate pace on the streets of Baku, setting the second fastest time in Free Practice, before qualifying in seventh.

In Sprint Race 1, the Campos Racing driver had strong pace in clean air and made a late overtake to pass the DAMS of Marcus Armstrong, securing sixth place and four more championship points.

In Sunday’s Feature Race, Ralph made good progress from seventh on the grid, and briefly led the race during the pit stop phase. Following his tyre change, Ralph re-joined in third, battling with PREMA’s Robert Shwartzman. Ralph then had solid pace and came home to claim fifth, his best result in a Formula 2 Feature Race and 10 more points for the championship.

The next F2 round takes place at Silverstone on 16-18 July.

Ralph Boschung: “I was very satisfied being in the top 10 in qualifying, which is always the goal with the reverse grid for Sprint Race 1. I think we could have done better than seventh considering the pace we had. It was the first time we felt we could fight for pole, the top three was definitely possible but we had a messy run which compromised our lap time.

"Sprint Race 1 was a huge opportunity for me to be on the podium but I lost a position at the start and had to look after the tyres. In clean air the pace was really good and towards the end I overtook Armstrong to finish sixth.

"In Sprint Race 2, unfortunately I was in the middle of a sandwich at the start and couldn’t really do much. I had broken suspension from contact with Théo Pourchaire, which was disappointing because we could have secured more points there.

"I got a good start in the Feature Race and I managed my tyres well to pit later than others. I battled with Shwartzman for a few laps which was great, but his pace was really good and he passed me. Unfortunately in the closing stages Drugovich attacked me and I was more focused on just finishing and taking some really solid points. Fifth is my best Feature Race result so I’m very happy with that.

"The main positive from the weekend is that there is still more potential in the car, which is a great feeling. We were again very close to the podium and took more good points, so I’m looking forward to Silverstone.”
